Denim Outfits We’re Loving for Fall

Dark jeans, a cream sweater, and brown boots are where I’m starting with fall denim outfit ideas. These seven looks give you ways to wear jeans, a denim skirt, or your favorite jacket for class, coffee runs, and weekends with friends.

I’m loving burgundy with blue denim, a shirt layered over a tee, and boots peeking out under a long skirt. Pick the look you keep coming back to, then swap in your own shoes or the sweater already in your closet.

Fall denim outfit ideas with a cream sweater

A cream cable-knit sweater, dark straight-leg jeans, and brown ankle boots make the first look. The knit adds texture beside the denim, and the brown shoes bring in another warm color.

Shop similar pieces: cream cable-knit sweater, dark straight-leg jeans, and tan ankle boots. These are options for the look, rather than the exact pieces in the photos.

For a loose sweater, you could tuck a small bit into the front of your jeans and leave the rest out. A shorter knit can sit right at the waistband. I like both with a brown belt when you want that detail to show.

You could also use a cream cardigan over a white tee. Leave it open, button it up, or carry it while the afternoon is still warm. Same jeans, a few ways to wear them.

Burgundy cardigan with relaxed jeans

Burgundy is the color I’d add next. Try a buttoned cardigan with medium-blue relaxed jeans and loafers. A cream tank underneath gives you another option when you open the cardigan.

For a similar layer, try this burgundy cardigan. It has a V-neck and buttons down the front.

For shoes, black loafers keep the colors focused on the cardigan and denim. Brown boots bring in a third color. If you already have red sneakers, I’d try those with it too.

This is a look you can wear to school, out for coffee, or to meet a friend for dinner. A small crossbody bag and gold hoop earrings can go along with it.

A denim midi skirt gives the next outfit a longer line. Try it with a soft cardigan or a fitted knit top and knee-high boots. A midi skirt falls between the knee and ankle, so the length will vary with your height.

I’m picturing dark blue denim with a burgundy cardigan here. A gray sweater and black boots would be another way to wear the skirt. If the skirt has a front slit, you’ll see more of the boots as you walk.

Before heading out, try a few steps and sit down in the whole outfit. You’ll get to see where the skirt lands and how much room the slit gives you to move.

A light denim shirt over a white tee works with deeper blue jeans. The two shades let you see each piece. You could leave the shirt open and roll the sleeves once, then add loafers or sneakers.

If you like a matching set, try two pieces close in color. I’d keep the shoes and belt brown and let the denim carry the look. Levi’s denim styling guide has more shape ideas, including barrel jeans with a pointed shoe.

Wide-leg hems and loafers

Wide-leg jeans with a fitted knit

Wide-leg jeans and a fitted long-sleeve knit give you room through the legs with a close fit on top. I like navy with dark blue denim, or cream with a faded blue pair.

For a warmer afternoon, try a short-sleeve knit and flats. When it cools down, a jacket can go over it. Madewell’s fall denim collection is another place to compare denim shapes if you’re still deciding which cut you like.

The hem changes which shoes you’ll see. Try your jeans with the actual pair you plan to wear, so you can check whether the fabric clears the ground.

A denim jacket over a fall dress

The denim can be the top layer too. Try a blue denim jacket over a brown, burgundy, or floral dress. Add ankle boots for one version, or lace-up boots for another.

I’d leave the jacket open so the dress shows through. A shorter jacket lets you see more of the skirt. A longer one gives you more denim in the outfit. Both are options to try with what you own.

Try this for a coffee run or a walk with friends. You can carry the jacket while the afternoon is warm, then put it on as the sun goes down.

Black denim with a striped top

Black straight-leg jeans, a striped long-sleeve tee, and sneakers make the last look. A tan jacket or burgundy cardigan can go over the top when you want a layer.

I like a wider stripe here because you can see the pattern from farther away. Try it with your favorite sneakers for class, then add a jacket for the walk home.

Pick the denim you reach for most and try one new pairing this week. For another color to wear with jeans, see our burgundy fall outfit ideas.
