What to pack for a weekend home from college

A weekend home from college calls for a smaller packing list than move-in day: a few clothes, your everyday essentials and anything you need for the trip back. Start with your actual plans for two nights, then give the chargers a place of their own. They do enjoy hiding under a blanket.

For a Friday-to-Sunday visit, the list below keeps the home trip and the return to campus in the same bag. Adjust it for your weather, travel plans and what you already keep at home.

Start with two nights and the plans you have

Choose your travel outfit first. Jeans, a tee and a cardigan can work for the ride and another part of the weekend. Add one fresh top for each day, underwear and socks for each night, pajamas and the shoes your plans call for.

If dinner with family needs something dressier, pack that outfit. If the plan is a long walk and a movie, give those clothes the space instead. A second coat can stay on its hanger when your travel layer already does the job.

The University of Illinois Springfield packing guide includes a duffel for a weekend at home. Your own small bag can do that job; this list doesn't call for new luggage.

Use this two-night packing list

The clothes you travel in count toward the weekend. For a two-night visit, use this as a starting point:

  • Two fresh tops, with an extra layer if the forecast calls for one.
  • One extra pair of bottoms if your plans need it.
  • Underwear and socks for each day, plus a spare pair.
  • Pajamas and any clothes for a planned activity.
  • One extra pair of shoes only if your travel pair won't suit the plans.
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant and the skin or hair items you use.
  • Glasses or contact-lens supplies, if you use them.
  • Your usual medicines and the supplies you need to take them as directed.
  • Phone, charger, wallet, keys and student ID.
  • Laptop and its charger only if you need them for the visit or work due before you return.

Keep the items you need during the ride near the top. A water bottle, headphones and the charging cable are more useful there than beneath the pajamas.

Keep your travel pouch small

A cream toiletries pouch holds plain travel bottles and a covered toothbrush.

Check what stays at home before packing full-size bottles. If you already have shampoo and toothpaste there, they can come off the travel list.

Put anything that could leak in a closed pouch. Keep the items you need that evening together, so you're opening one pouch rather than every pocket in the bag. If you fly, check your airline and airport's current bag and liquid rules separately.

Make a separate plan for laundry

If you're bringing laundry home, ask first and agree on when you'll wash it. Keep worn clothes apart from the clean outfits. A washable bag you already own can handle that separation.

Before Sunday packing, check that the washed clothes are dry and ready to travel. Add detergent or a new laundry bag only if you actually need one. The useful part is knowing which clothes are coming back with you.

For a much bigger campus packing job, use our college packing list. That guide covers setting up for school; this one stays with a short visit home.

Check the work you need before you leave

Look at the tasks due before Monday. If you need an hour for a reading or an assignment, pick when it fits and bring only the materials that task needs. A whole desk is a fairly committed travel companion.

If you're planning around a test, our college exam-prep timeline can help you choose the next bit of work. The weekend bag only needs the part you'll use.

Keep a return-to-campus list

Make a short note before you unpack at home. Add the things you want to bring back, such as a warmer coat, a book or the clean sheets you left there.

Before the return trip, check these four places:

  1. The outlet where you charged your phone.
  2. The bathroom where you left the travel pouch.
  3. The laundry area where clean clothes are drying.
  4. The table or hook where you put keys and your student ID.

Then check your ride, the time you need to leave and access to your room when you arrive. Zip the bag with the charger inside. That's the one we'd give its own final check.
